11 km from Ajmer on the dege of the desert lies the tiny tranquil of Pushkar along the bank of the Picturesque Pushkar Lake – an important Pilgrimage Spot for the Hindus. The ‘Nag Pahar’ or the snake mountain forms a natural boundary between Ajmer and Pushkar. The lake has a mythological associated with it. According to myth, Lord Brahma was on his way to Search for a Suitable Plase to perform a ‘Yagna’ (a fire Sacrifice). While contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand on the earth and water sproutedfrom three Places. One of them was Pushkar where Lord Brahma performed his yagna. Surrounded by hills on three sides, Pushkar abound in temples. Of these the most famous is the Brahma temple – the only temple dedicated to lord Brahma in the country.

The holy lake has 52 ghats and pilgrims taking a ritual dip in the lake is a common sight. Every year thousands of devotees throng the lake around the full moon day of Kartik Purnima in October-November to take a holy dip in the lake. A huge and colourful cattle fair-the Pushkar Fair, is also held during this time.

 

 PRIME SITES:

Sevitri Temple: A temple dedicated to the first wife of Lord Brahma-the Savitri temple is located on the hill behind the Brahma Temple which can be reached by a flight of steps. The temple offers a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding desertscape.


 EXCURSIONS:

Trevor’s Tank ( 5 km): Named after the British engineer who constructed it, Trevor’s Tank is a delight for birdwatchers with densely wooded hills that are a haven to pigeons, peacocks and partridges.

Achalgarh ( 8 km): An impressive fort with some beautiful Jain temples enclosed withing.


Guru Shikhar ( 15 km):
The highest peak on the mount (1722 mts above the sea level) allows a bird’s eye view of the sylvan surrounding of Mt. Abu.

 WHERE TO STAY:

Sarover (Man Mahal), Pushkar
This is the largest royal house in Pushkar. It was built by Raja Man Singh I of Amer and used by him on his trips to the holy town of Pushkar. The palace is located on the east of Sarovar, the sacred lake in Pushkar and gives a clear view of the banks and the temples located around the Sarovar. This traditional guest house has now been turned into a hotel.
